Plant your tree: Atlantic Forest and Silva Jardim

Image
Leaving for a travel always brings an hidden mixture of expectations. Deep inside, each of us hope to be positively surprised by a location, a person or an experience encountered on the way. This was also our mood after Rio de Janeiro, driving to Silva Jardim, but none of us would have ever expected such a blast. In this article we are going to talk about this special place, its community and all the initiatives that are taking place there. Silva Jardim is a small town of 22.000 inhabitants, 110 km north east of Rio de Janeiro. After a prosper period in XIX century, given by a good trade in wood and sugar cane, the municipality has been ranked down to one of the poorest in Brazil. Walking through its streets, you can understand how many fields and properties have been abandoned. Our goal is to spend time in farms and learn about permaculture, therefore our search of hosts is based more on the quality of the projects than the location itself. We didn't know much about this ar...

Rio here we come!

Our adventure on a new continent last already two weeks and we are still alive! But if you think we got accustomed, you are mistaken. After an 11 hours flight and an almost lost backpack, you can imagine how overwhelming the first impressions have been for us, stepping from the airplane straight into Rio de Janeiro, a vibrant metropolis with 7.5 million inhabitants. Here in Brazil everything is bigger. Some more examples? Its territory could contain Germany for 16 times. The first toad we have seen was bigger than Johanna’s hand.  A small beer measures 350ml, instead of 330ml. We were lucky to meet Bruno, a real Carioca (that’s how Brazilians call a person from Rio de Janeiro) who accepted our Couchsurfing request. He did not only invite us to stay with him and his family but also drove us around for hours, up the hills and down the hills, in his car with darkened windows. Noticing that most of the cars had them, we were wondering if that is because of the...

Fly away with us

Glad that you found your way back to the Travelsauria blog This is going to be a special article, not necessarily because of its content but of the place where we are writing from: right above the Atlantic Ocean. That's right, dear readers. At this particular moment, we are crossing the Equator and flying for the first time in our life to the southern hemisphere. As you can imagine, it’s a huge step (or actually a long flight) and hopefully is going to be a great adventure. Our feelings are a mix of natural fears and overwhelming excitement, we can’t wait to explore the rough beauty of the South American continent. And soon we will write about never-ending bus rides, hidden tent-pitching spots, alternative hiking trails, cheap street food experiences and hitchhiking lifts. In a few hours we will land in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil but before talking about the Carioca State, let’s take a step back together and have a closer look at what really moves us. Me, Fabio, and ...

Just the Beginning

Here we are, dear readers! Old and new friends, families or simple visitors. We are finally online and this is our very first article . At the moment, while we are writing, it feels like we are lost in the middle of one of the biggest city junction in the world. Something like the ones you see in the documentaries about Japan, with thousands people crossing at the same time, from any possible direction. And we don't know exactly where we need to go, where to walk forward and which side to choose. The famous Shibuya crossing in Tokyo (by Sean Pavone) We won't probably be able to describe in this short introduction all the reasons why we are creating this Blog, who we are and where we want to go with it (we actually don't know that entirely yet). However, we can list three main points why we started: Fabio loves to write , any kind of texts (poems, short and long stories, diaries) We love to travel and now we're doing it together ...
